McGill's McCuaig named De Facto Quebec athlete of the week

MONTREAL -- Distance runner Sarah McCuaig of the McGill women's cross-country running team is the De Facto Quebec university female athlete of the week for the period ending Oct. 31, 2010.

It marks her second such honour and the fifth time this fall that a McGill student was named conference athlete of the week by the newly-named Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec. McCuaig was previously picked on Sept. 20. Other recipients from McGill include hockey players Francis Verreault-Paul (Oct. 26) and Alex Picard-Hooper (Oct. 16), plus soccer star Alexandra Morin-Boucher (Sept. 13).

McCuaig, a 20-year-old physiology sophomore from Waterloo, Ont., led wire-to-wire as the McGill Martlets captured the Quebec university championship at the Parc Centre de Nature, Saturday. The 5-foot-10 distance runner finished first in a field of 57, completing the five-kilometre course in 18 minutes, 12 seconds, to win the race by 14 seconds.

She was also named athlete of the meet and athlete of the year in the Quebec league. McCuaig enrolled at McGill in 2009 out of Sir John A. Macdonald secondary school in Waterloo.

The Quebec male athlete of the week award went to Sherbrooke cross-country runner Olivier-Gabriel Lavoie, a native of Laval, Que., who captured the men's division at the conference championship meet.

De Facto is an innovative tobacco prevention campaign led by Sport Etudiant, geared towardsÌý eliminating smoking among young adults and revealing the truth about the consequences of using tobacco.
