SHERBROOKE, Que. - Valerie Grand'Maison of Fleurimont, Que., won gold, silver and bronze medals as McGill placed third of five teams in women's division of the first Quebec Cup swim meet of the season, Friday.

On the men's side, Steven Bielby of Pointe Claire, Que., scored three silvers as the Redmen also finished third.

Grand'Maison was on the 4x200 free relay and 4x50 free relay squads which finished first and second, respectively. She finished third in the 400 free with a time of four minutes, 34.54 seconds.

The only other member of the Martlets to medal was Rayven Snodgrass, a kinesiology freshman from Calgary, who won gold on the 4x200 free relay and bronze in the 200 individual medley (2:25.32)

The Martlets finished with 62 points, behind the Montreal Carabins (117) and Laval (103).

"We were just seven points behind Laval on the women's side at the midway point of the meet, but our girls faltered badly in the second half, despite winning the last relay," said head coach Peter Carpenter.

The Redmen scored 60 points to finish behind first-place Laval (166) and second-place Montreal (114).

"On the men's side, the swim of the meet was Arthur Baux who shocked everyone on deck moving from his 16th place entry time to a bronze medal finish in the 200 breaststroke."

Baux, a first-year engineering student on exchange from France, was clocked in 2:27.74.

Bielby was third in the 100 back (58.87 seconds) and the 200 IM (2:07.15) and capped off his silver triumvirate swimming lead-off in 4x50 free. The only other member of the Redmen to reach the podium was freshman Pierre-Alexandre Renaud of Laval, Que.

The McGill swim team will compete next weekend when they host a dual meet with at memorial pool,
