McGill seeks new coach for centennial season of intercollegiate hockey

MONTREAL - Drew Love, executive director of athletics & recreation at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ, has announced that he is actively searching for a full-time coach to direct the men's varsity hockey program.

The position had been filled on an interim basis by Jim Webster, a former McGill player, who was recruited to handle the chores late last August when Martin Raymond stepped down to accept an offer from the Montreal Canadiens as an assistant coach with their AHL affiliate in Hamilton, Ont.

"I thank and congratulate Jim on a terrific season and wish him well," said Love. "He graciously agreed to step in and help us out for the season after the unexpected departure of Coach Raymond, who had done a tremendous job building the program into a national contender during his 14-year tenure with the Redmen."

Webster, a 61-year-old native of Montreal, guided the Redmen to a 22-6 regular season record and the Queen's Cup title as champions of the Ontario University Athletics hockey league. McGill, which iced the world's first organized hockey team in 1877 and has won 15 Queen's Cup titles since the Canadian intercollegiate hockey league was formed in 1902, will be celebrating the 100th season of Queen's Cup competition next fall (excluding the nine years during both wars when no games were played).

"The program is in excellent shape," added Love, who indicated that he plans to have a new full-time head coach in place in the near future. "We are only losing a handful of players to graduation and have commitments from a few high-profile recruits. We are now focused on appointing a coach who will lead and continue to develop the program on a long-term basis."
