McGill quells Queen's, extend win streak to three

Published: 15 November 2008

KINGSTON – Three different skaters scored and two goalies shared a shutout as McGill blanked Queen’s 3-0 in men’s university hockey before 920 raucous fans at the Memorial Centre in Kingston, Saturday.

It was the third straight victory for the Redmen (3-4-1) who have now taken seven out of a possible eight points in their last four games after dropping their first four contests to start the season.

The game had an ominous beginning for the Redmen as starting netminder Hubert Morin, a freshman from St. Georges de Beauce, Que., was removed from the game at the four-minute mark after suffering a suspected shoulder injury in a goal-mouth collision. He had made only one save before giving way to rookie Danny Mireault, who kicked aside 12 shots the rest of the way for the victory and a “shared” shutout, which officially goes to the team but not the goaltenders.

Sam Bloom set up a first-period power-play marker by defenceman Ken Morin of St. Prosper, Que., which held up as the game-winner. Bloom, a senior from Toronto, then assisted on rookie Alex Picard-Hooper’s goal at 13:50 of the middle stanza. The Redmen put the game out of reach only 19 seconds later when Leonard Verrilli, a junior forward from Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., jammed home a rebound from a goalmouth scramble.

McGill held a distinct territorial advantage, with a dominating 32-13 edge in shots on goal. The game featured 75 minutes in penalties, including 55 to the Gaels, who have now lost 13 consecutive matchups with the Redmen, dating back to a 5-2 Queen’s victory in Kingston, Feb. 6, 2004.

McGill plays Carleton (6-2-1) in Ottawa on Saturday at 3 p.m. and will be looking to avenge a shocking 4-1 loss at Carleton on Oct. 18. The Gaels, who defeated Ottawa 2-1 in a shootout Friday night, will play at UQTR on Nov. 21.
