McGill grad garners gold as Canada doubles USA to win world inline hockey championship

BUCARAMANGA, Colombia - The Canadian women's senior inline hockey team had a McGill flavour when it defeated the United States 4-2 on Saturday, to claim gold at the 11th annual world championship of the Fédération Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS), a nine-team tournament in Bucaramanga, Colombia.

One of the assistant coaches with the Canadian squad is Stéphan Marcoux, a native of Boucherville, Que., who played varsity football and hockey at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ, graduating with an arts degree in 1989. He has been operating a sports equipment business in Colombia for about two decades and also serves as president of the Canpro inline hockey club.

It marked the fourth time that Canada has captured the FIRS crown. They previously won in 2002, 2004 and 2005.

The Canadian team finished with an unblemished 6-0 record, opening the tourney with a 12-0 win over Brazil 12-0 on July 2, then posting a 12-1 conquest over Argentina (July 3) and a 4-0 decision over France (July 4). In the playoff round, Canada smothered Colombia 13-0 in a quarter-final (July 5),Ìýfollowed by a 3-1 semifinal victory over Spain (July 6) and the 4-2 win over the USA (July 7).

Canada's victory avenged last year's 3-2 loss to the USA in the gold medal affair, when the Americans tallied the game-winner with just one second left on the clock.

Joining Marcoux on the coaching staff was head coach Donna Forbes,Ìý along with assistants Keely Brown and Pablo Navarro.

The Canadian roster included team captain LaToya Clarke, Jackie Jarrell, Kathy Devereaux-Simoes, Michelle Bonello, Kendra Fisher, Amanda Squire, Nicole Collier, Lindsay Grigg, Brooke Ludolph, Amanda Parkins, Amanda Reid, Montana Merante, Jessica Sorensen and Dana Somerville.
