MONTREAL - A goal by Ottawa native Gareth Pugh in the 47th minute of play held up as the game-winner and visiting McGill cruised to a 3-1 conquest against winless Concordia in men's university soccer, Friday.

Ìý

The Redmen dominated territorially with a 19-8 margin in shots toward the net, a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks and a 10-5 edge in crossing passes.

Ìý

Sami Obaid, a third-year medical student from Laval, Que., opened the scoring in the 39th minute and Pugh, a fifth-year senior, took a pass from Jeremy Hurdle to make it 2-0 for the Redmen.

Ìý

The Stingers broke a shutout bid by 'keeper Jean-Lou Gosselin of Deux-Montagnes, Que., in the 69th minute when Bryan Bourbonnais's marker gave Concordia some life.

Ìý

But that turned out to be false hope as rookie Nicolas Gonzales of Vaudreuil-Dorion iced the contest with a goal in injury time.

McGill (2-1-0) stands second in the seven-team Quebec conference, one point behind the undefeated Montreal Carabins (2-0-1). The Redmen play UQAM (1-0-1) on Sunday at Jeanne Mance Park, located just across Park Avenue, a few hundred metres east of Molson Stadium.
