MONTREAL – A record number of student-athletes from McGill University have won third-party financial awards, often referred to as "athletic scholarships", from the Quebec Foundation for University Sports. McGill received 16 awards this year -- to match a single-season school best previously set in 1989 -- from the Foundation, which recentyl shelled out a record 76 bursaries worth $146,500 to student-athletes from eight universities.

Since the Quebec Foundation awards were initiated in 1983, McGill athletes, coaches and teams have garnered 206 awards totaling $383,500.

Top kudos went to the McGill women’s hockey squad, the defending CIS champions, which captured two major categories, including team of the year and coach of the year (Peter Smith).

In addition, four members of the hockey Martlets received bursaries, led by freshman Marie-Andree Leclerc-Auger, a high-scoring forward from Sherbrooke, Que., who won a $6,000 recruitment bursary. Junior netminder Charline Labonté, an Olympian from Boisbriand, Que., was handed an athletic excellence award for $1,500.

Identical athletic awards were also presented to junior rearguard Catherine Ward, a recent addition to the national team who hails from Town of Mount Royal, Que., plus forward Vanessa Davidson, a senior from Kirkland, Que.

McGill ended up with a school record eight recruitment bursaries, including Anneth Him-Lazarenko of St. Dorothée, Que., a highly-prized basketball recruit out of Vanier College who received $6,000.

Rounding out the recruitment awards was volleyball’s Émilie Kyte ($3,000) of Ottawa, and soccer’s Laura Gibson ($3,000) of Bloomington, Ont., plus three freshmen from the hockey Redmen – forward Alexandre Picard-Hooper ($3,000) of Boucherville, Que., defenceman Marc-André Dorion ($2,000) of St. Hubert, Que., and goaltender Kevin Desfossés ($3,000) of Beauport, Que.

Three others McGill veterans also pocketed some cash, including football players Anthony Lukca of St. Laurent, Que., who earned an Alouettes Gildan leadership award worth $1,750, plus receiver Charles-Antoine Sinotte of Trois-Rivières, who received both Academic and Athletic excellence awards from the Alouettes, totaling $3,000. Vvolleyball’s Jennifer Thomson, an all-Canadian power-hitter from Rosemere, Que., received a combined total of $3,250 for winning a Molson Foundation academic with a Quebec Government athletic excellence bursary.
