McGill announces venue change for w.Hockey finals

Published: 9 March 2009

MONTREAL – The McGill women’s hockey team have agreed to a request for a venue change in the upcoming Quebec university League Championship Series for the Ed Enos Cup.

The top-ranked Martlets, who finished first atop the Quebec conference with a perfect 18-0 record and have won 49 consecutive games against CIS opponents, will open their best-of-three series in Ottawa on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Game 2 of the series will now be played at McConnell Arena, on the McGill campus, Friday at 7 p.m. If a rubber match is needed, it will be back at McConnell on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The series was initially scheduled to open in Montreal in Wednesday but officials at the University of Ottawa had requested that the venues be switched for the first two games in order to avoid a conflict with the CIS men’s basketball championships which take place in the nation’s capital this weekend.

Ottawa advanced to the conference final after winning a grueling three-game semifinal series over Carleton. Each game finished with identical 2-1 scores and each was decided in double overtime – a first for the Quebec league.

McGill swept all seven games against the second-place Gee-Gees this season, outscoring Ottawa by a 43-9 margin.
