SHERBROOKE -- The McGill golf team opened their 2011 fall schedule with the Bishops Invitational tournament at the Milby Golf Club in Sherbrooke, Aug. 31-Sept.1. The tourney featured 65 men and 21 women in the first of four tournaments on the Quebec university circuit.

Both McGill teams showed some early season jitters as well as some excellent performances. The Martlets placed third, a miniscule five shots behind the second place Montreal Carabins (517). The perennial champion Laval team led the women's division by an impressive 29 shots.

The Redmen finished fifth of 12 teams with a score of 624, only seven shots behind fourth-place Sherbrooke and 11 in arrears of third-place UQTR. Laval finished first overall with a 579 total, just two shots ahead of the Carabins.

On the individual leader board, Dayvi Khanna (Kahnawake) finished fourth in the women's competition after posting excellent scores of 79 and 81 on the par-74 Milby course, eight shots behind leader Laurence Migneault of the Carabins.

McGill's top female scorer was Jen Newton (Royal Montreal), who posted her best tournament score on Thursday with a personal best tournament round of 85.

On the men's side, Brian Neill (Royal Ottawa) was the top Redmen scorer with a six-over par, shooting rounds of 77 and 75 (15th). Teammate Yannick Schuwey, a freshman from Switzerland, was next. His one-under par 72 on Thursday left him tied for 17th of 65 entries with a 152 total. Benoit Miguel, a freshman from France, tied for 30th with a total of 159.

Jean-Phillip Cornellier of the Carabins led the men's division with a six-under par 140. Charles Cote of Laval finished second at 141, followed by teammate Sonny Michaud with 143.

"I was pleased with the play of some of our players but expect more from our veterans," said Bob Dubeau, head coach of the Redmen, who indicated that he expects to see some lower scores, especially by the men's team, at the next tournament, hosted by McGill, Sept. 11-12, at the Owl's Head club in the Eastern Townships.
