Martlets overwhelm Real Union in Southern France
SAINT JEAN DE LUZ, France – Alexandra Morin-Boucher, a freshman
forward from St. Gabriel de Brandon, Que., scored four times and
the Ď㽶ĘÓƵ women’s soccer team exploded for eight
first-half goals en route to an 11-0 whitewash over Real Union at
Arin Luzien stadium in southern France, Wednesday.
Rounding out the first-half scoring for the Martlets were freshmen
Kyrin Dhaliwal of Burnaby, B.C., Anna Smith of Somerville, Mass.,
Laura Gibson of Bloomingdale, Ont., and Zohra Bendouah, a
first-year transfer from the Montreal Carabins.
Smith also tallied in the second stanza, along with Neena Gupta, a
fifth-year senior from Brampton, Ont., and Kathleen Wakeling, a
freshman from Edmonton.
“We were able to impose our technical dominance, almost from the
start of the game,” said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot, a native
of the Saint Jean de Luz, who had played professionally there for
the local Arin Luzien club two decades ago. “We we’re clearly a
much stronger side, both physically and athletically.”
Morin-Boucher, who tallied the game’s first three markers, took
advantage of a defensive miscommunication by Real Union, a Spanish
team from the Basque town of Irun, to open the scoring. The play
seemed to rattle the Spanish side and from that point on, McGill
was able to impose its own rhythm, controlling the play for the
remainder of the match.
Freshman goalkeeper Shimone Slomowitz of West Vancouver, B.C.,
started and earned the victory but shared the shutout with Evelyne
Boulay, a senior from Trois-Rivieres, Que., who came in at
halftime.
The Martlets will play Friday against Sporting Club Arthez Lacq
Audejos, an undefeated senior team, better known as SCALA, from the
Aquitane League. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start in the
town of Lacq, which is located about an hour from Saint Jean de
Luz.
MARTLET MURMURS: Gupta, who last played for the Martlets in 2005,
served double duty as a physiotherapist… Other grads also making an
appearance for the Martlets were Emanuela Narcisi and Gayle Noble,
both who were serving as player-coaches.
