Martlets duo double dips as Stingers stung
Ìý
MONTREAL - Alexandra Morin-Boucher and Sophia Horricks each tallied twice as McGill crushed Concordia 5-0 to capture the fourth annual Erica Cadieux memorial trophy, symbolic of women's university soccer supremacy between the two institutions.
Ìý
The Martlets have won all four of the Cadieux Cups, an annual affair named in memory of the former Stinger players, who died tragically in 2006 when she was struck by a car.
Ìý
It marked the first regular season conquest for the McGill women (1-2), who dropped their home opener 2-1 to Montreal, and suffered a 4-2 loss at Sherbrooke last week.
Ìý
Morin-Boucher, a 20-year-old education sophomore from St. Gabriel de Brandon, Que., was picked as McGill's player of the game. She scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 16th minute of play, then gave McGill a commanding 3-0 lead at the nine-minute mark of the second half. Some 11 minutes later, she assisted on Horricks first of two.
Ìý
Horricks, an arts freshman from Vancouver who made it 5-0 in the final minute of play, also had three-point night.
Ìý
Also scoring for the Martlets was Cristina Di Caprio, a fifth-year striker from Laval, Que., who connected in the 34th minute to give the Martlets a 2-0 lead,
Ìý
"We had a strong outing with a high quality of play and ball movement," said Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Martlets. "We made some lineup changes after a very disappointing loss at Sherbrooke. This game was about pride and our need to go back to the success mode. We had a very decent start and were able to play with speed and enthusiasm."
Ìý
McGill had a 19-4 advantage in shots on net but ran into a hot goaltender in veteran Fanny Berthiaume, who was named as Concordia's player of the game.
Ìý
"Our ability to finish should have been better but at least we were to create numerous good scoring opprtunities," noted Mounicot.
Ìý
"A number of of the girls played with nagging injuries but were able to step up and bring some leadership for a full 90 minutes. It was a character win."
Ìý
The Martlets (1-2) will now make the short jaunt across Park Avenue to play winless UQAM (0-2-1) on Sunday at Jeanne Mance Park in a 4 p.m. affair.
