WATERLOO, Ont. - Marie-Eve Martin of Granby, Que., scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed six rebounds as the visiting McGill Martlets rallied from a six-point halftime deficit to upend Laurier 70-58 in the opener of the 43rd annual Naismith Classic basketball tourney, Friday.

Martin, a 5-foot-8 sophomore guard, shot 5-for-11 from the floor, 2-for-8 from three-point range and went an impressive 6-for-7 from the charity stripe.

Teammates Helen Bibeau of Longueuil, Que., and Francoise Charest of Quebec City, both sophomores, added 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Megan Grant, a six-foot post from Thunder Bay, Ont., scored 15 points in a losing cause for the Golden Hawks, who held a slight 32-29 advantage in rebounds.

McGill shot a stellar 48 per cent from the floor (24 of 50), 40 percent from trey territory (8 of 20) and 78 per cent from the foul-line (14 of 18). Laurier shot 30 per cent from the floor and 77 per cent from the field. They went 0-for-13 from three-point territory.

Laurier meets Alberta at 1 p.m. Saturday, while the Martlets, now 2-1 in preseason play, will take on host Waterloo at 3 p.m.
