MONTREAL - Thomas Lucas, a senior defender from Kirkland, Que., scored in injury time to give McGill a surprisingly narrow 2-1 victory at Concordia in men's university soccer on Sunday.
Ìý
Johann Capolungo converted a pass from Jeremy Hurdle to put the Redmen on the scoreboard only two minutes after the opening whistle but the pesky Stingers battled back and beat Redmen 'keeper Jean-Lou Gosselin the equalizer in the 57th minute.
Ìý
Things got hairy some six minutes later, when Gosselin, a third-year veteran from Deux-Montagnes, Que., was injured in a goalmouth collision. Unable to continue, he was replaced by sophomore Matt Gilmour of Vancouver, B.C., who ended up making three saves and was credited with the victory, thanks to the last-minute heroics by Lucas.

Concordia had a 12-9 advantage in shots toward net. It was a rough affair, featuring 34 fouls and eight yellow cards, five of which were assessed to McGill.
Ìý
"We we're lucky and won despite being horrendous out there," said David Simon, who was very disappointed with the performance put forth by his troops. "It was a total lack of effort on our part and Concordia deserved a better fate."
Ìý
The Redmen sit third in the QUSL standings with a 2-1 record, six points behind division-leading Laval (4-0) and one point behind second-place Montreal (2-1-1). Fourth-place UQTR (1-1-2) sits just one point behind the Redmen and will visit Molson Stadium on Sept. 25. McGill will then travel around Mt. Royal to take on the Carabins on Sept. 26.
