Laval runs to victory, Redmen fourth at McGill Open

MONTREAL - The Laval Rouge et Or posted their first-ever McGill Open victory and McGill came in fourth of 14 teams in the men's division at their 18th annual cross-country running meet on the slopes of Mt. Royal, Saturday.

Matt Hulse of Queen's captured the men's individual title, finishing the six-kilometre race in 19 minutes, 47 seconds. Others to reach the podium were Laval's Dominic Michaud (19:58) and Concordia's Ryan Noel-Hodge (20:00).

The top performance by the Redmen was registered by Daniel Kramer, a 20-year-old neuroscience sophomore from Salem, Mass., who placed seventh overall, completing the circuit in 20:20.

Kramer bettered his performance from last year's McGill Open, where he was the team's fifth-best runner and placed 26th with a clocking of 20:40.

"Dan has improved much from last year," said veteran McGill head coach Dennis Barrett. "He came back to school in good shape, is motivated to do well, listens to instruction, asks questions about technique and is highly focused on improving."

Rounding out the scoring for the Redmen were seniors Graydon Snider (9th, 20:21) of Ottawa and Ken Douglas (17th, 20:46) of Los Gatos, Calif., plus sophomore Alexander Duhault (24th, 21:08) of Calgary and Teddy Lavoie (27th, 21:13), a freshman from Toronto.

Laval finished atop the podium in overall team scoring with 56 points, based upon runners who placed second, fourth, eighth, 20th and 22nd. Western was second with 60 points and Queen's was third with 76.

McGill placed fourth (84), followed by Sherbrooke (110), Concordia (113), College Shawinigan (239), F.X. Garneau (255), John Abbott College (265), College Ahuntsic (296), College Granby-Haute-Yamaska (334), College Abitibi-Témiscamingu (359), College Montmorency (377) and College Mérici (386).

Up next for the Redmen will be the 35th annual Western International open meet at the Thames Valley Golf Course in London, Ont., Sept. 26.
