Lacrosse Redmen quell Queen's in Kingston

Published: 3 October 2010

KINGSTON, Ont. --Ìý Noah Miller of Burlington, Vt., scored four goals as the McGill men's lacrosse team doubled Queen's 10-5 at Tindall Field in Kingston, Ont., Sunday. Ìý Miller now ranks third in the league with 19 goals in seven games.

The first half was marred by sloppy lacrosse and played out as a defensive battle that was knotted at 2-2 after the opening quarter and 4-4 at halftime.ÌýÌýÌý A sluggish Redmen offence did not get untracked until the second half when they outscored the Gaels 6-1.

Brendan Simeson of Whitby, Ont., sparked the Redmen offence on a 70-yard dash from defensive midfield in the waning seconds of the half, tying the score at 4-4 with just 20 seconds remaining. Simeson, an MBA student playing his sixth season in the league, single-handedly took over the game and tallied two more goals on breakaways from the defensive zone to set a school record for most goals (three) by a defensive midfielder.

"Simeson really won the game for us and provided a huge play to unnerve a Queen's team that tried to slow down the tempo of the game," said McGill head coach Tim Murdoch. "He is a gifted athlete who exloded from the defensive middy position with three goals on breakaways."

Also scoring for McGill was Ryan Besse of Aurora, Ont., Mike Ting of Boston, Mass., and attackman Ossie Long of Sarnia, Ont.

McGill goaltender Guy Fox had another solid outing and lowered his league-leading goals-against average to 5.86. He also leads in minutes played with 560.

Queen's five-goal offensive output was paced by Kevin Harper (2 goals), while Matt Erickson, Braden Hergott, and Thomas Herren each scored singles.

It was a surprisingly tame affair, with McGill being assessed four penalties while Queen's had only two. The win moved McGill into second place in CUFLA East at 5-2 behind Carleton (6-1) with two games in hand over third-place Bishop's (4-1). Queen's (2-5)sits in fourth, ahead of Toronto (1-5) and Trent (1-6).

The Redmen return to CUFLA action on Oct. 16 with a rematch in Ottawa against the first-place Carleton Ravens.

McGill will now focus on hosting the Ross-Victory Cup tournament, October 8-10, to determine the Canadian senior field lacrosse champions.ÌýÌý The Redmen previously hosted the event in 2006 and placed fifth overall.

"We hope to improve upon that result by finishing in the top three in Canada,"Ìý said Murdoch.

McGill will play in a three-team pool against the Abbotsford Attack (ranked No.2 in British Columbia) and the Toronto Maple Leafs (ranked No.1 in Ontario). The other pool features the Ladner Pioneers (ranked No. 1 team in BC), Ìýas well as select teams from Barrie, Ont., Calgary and the Black Sheep from Wakefield, Que.
