Lacrosse coach announces final roster spots for 2009 recruiting class

MONTREAL - Tim Murdoch, head coach of the McGill men's lacrosse team that won the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association's Eastern Conference title last year, has announced 16 newcomers have officially made his team's 2009 roster, including eight U.S.-born players and three walk-ons.

Ìý

Ryan Besse is a 5-foot-9, 165-pound attackman who also plays midfield. A native of Aurora, Ont., and a box lacrosse player with the Newmarket Saints, Besse served as captain of St. Andrew's College's field lacrosse team that won back-to-back provincial championships in Ontario in 2008 and 2009.

Richard Brode is a 6-foot, 175-pound long-stick midfielder from Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. A visiting fall student, Brode attended Cold Spring Harbor High School and played two seasons at Swarthmore College in the NCAA.

Chris Cable is a 6-foot-3, 215-pound defenceman from Chapel Hill, N.C.Ìý Cable graduated from Chapel Hill High School where his team won back-to-back state championships in 2008 and 2009. ÌýCable also played for North Carolina's travel team, the Triangle Selects.

Max Deschner is a 5-foot-11, 175-pound midfielder from Kelowna, B.C., who attended Kelowna Secondary School. Deschner played box lacrosse for Kelowna's Jr. B team where he served as captain.

Greg Henry is a 5-foot-9, 170-pound attackman and offensive midfielder from Halton Hills, Ont. Henry, who played box lacrosse for the Halton Hills Bulldogs, originally earned a starting position as a freshman on McGill's 2007 squad, then moved on to pursue his studies at the University of Waterloo before transferring back to McGill this fall.

Simon Hudson is a 5-foot-11, 165-pound goalie from Seattle, Wash., and graduate of Garfield High School where he earned second team All-State honours and was a member of the Seattle Starz lacrosse club. Ìý Hudson later attended Bridgton Academy in Maine where he played varsity lacrosse and spent the past year in post-graduate studies.

Alex Kruse is a 5-foot-11, 175-pound attackman from Oakville, Ont., and a graduate of Oakville Trafalgar High School. A member of the Ontario Edge field lacrosse team, Kruse also plays for the Oakville Buzz in the Ontario Lacrosse Association and in 2008 he was selected eighth overall in the Ontario Jr.A box lacrosse draft.

Ossie Long is a 6-foot, 180-pound attackman from Sarnia, Ont.Ìý A graduate of Northern Collegiate High School, Long brings 11 years of box lacrosse experience with both the Wallaceburg Red Devils and the St. Clair Spirit.

Jon Rathauser is a 5-foot-9, 170-pound long-stick midfielder from Bell Meade, N.J., who played varsity lacrosse at The Lawrenceville School. Rathauser joins captain and All-Canadian Luke LaCava and Will Edwards, the team's 2008 rookie of the year, as the third Lawrenceville player on McGill's 2009 roster.

Kyle Robinson is a 6-foot, 160-pound defenceman from New Westminster, B.C., and a graduate of New Westminster Secondary School.Ìý A transfer from Simon Fraser University, Robinson played for the New Westminster Salmonbellies and the Burnaby Mountain Selects where he was a captain.ÌýÌýRobinson also captained BC's under-18 and U-17 provincial championship teams where he merited MVP honours.

Jishan Sharples is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound midfielder from Vancouver, B.C., who attended Lord Byng Secondary School.Ìý Sharples played for the Burnaby Selects and was drafted in the first round by the Jr. A Burnaby Lakers in the British Columbia box lacrosse draft.

Ben Uveges, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound midfielder, is a native of Phelps, NY and graduate of Midlakes High School.Ìý He finished second in scoring at Midlakes and earned all-league honors in New York's Fingerlakes District.

James Vickery is a 5-foot-10, 185-pound midfielder from Wrentham, Mass., who graduated from Xaverian Brothers. Vickery, who led his team in ground balls and finished second in scoring, was a member of the Mass Elite club lacrosse team.

Frazer Anderson is a 6-foot, 185-pound defenceman from Salem, Mass., where he was an accomplished rugby player at Pingree School.

Matt Behan is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound midfielder from Saratoga Springs, N.Y., where he captained Saratoga High School's varsity lacrosse team.

Ìý

Nick Shaw is a 6-foot, 175-pound midfielder from Toronto, who played varsity lacrosse at Upper Canada College.
