Labont茅 large as Canadian women beat Finnish boys
HELSINKI, Finland 鈥� Charline Labont茅, the McGill goaltender from Boisbriand, Que., made 22 saves as Canada defeated EHC Red Devil, a local Midget AAA boys team, 3-1, in preparation for the 2009 IIHF world hockey championship, Saturday.
Her shutout bid ended at 16:44 of the third when EFC forward Jani Punnala scored on a penalty shot. Punnala fired a wrist shot just under the cross bar for the Finnish team鈥檚 lone goal.
Tessa Bonhomme of Sudbury, Ont., scored in the first period and Gillian Apps of Unionville, Ont., and Montrealer Caroline Ouellette added goals in the second
Canada returns to action on Sunday, when they face the Espoo Blues. A third and final pre-tourney exhibition game is set for Tuesday against Finland.
The 2009 IIHF event kicks off on April 4, with Canada facing-off against China.
