The kids are all Wright as hat-trick highlights Redmen rout over Stingers

Published: 31 January 2010

MONTREAL -- Andrew Wright, a sophomore forward from Toronto, scored a hat-trick and goaltender Hubert Morin posted his third shutout as the No.5-ranked McGill men's hockey team celebrated the 133rd anniversary of their founding with an 11-0 rout over Concordia at Ed Meagher Arena, Sunday.

Ìý

It was quite a birthday party, one that was similar to their 12-3 Carnival Week victory over Concordia 18 days ago. The only thing missing this time was the co-ed streaker that made a surprise appearance at the last rendez-vous.

Ìý

The Redmen, who played their first-ever game on Jan. 31, 1877, led 3-0 after the opening period and exploded for seven goals in the second frame to lead Concordia 10-0 after two. It marked the second time that McGill had accomplished that feat this season. The other seven-goal period was also in the second stanza and happened in McGill's 12-3 conquest over Concordia on Jan. 13. The school record for most goals scored in a period is 10 in a 16-4 decision over the Montreal Carabins on Feb. 25, 1949.

Ìý

The Redmen have now won their last six meetings with Concordia, outscoring the Stingers 44-9 during that stretch.

Ìý

McGill outshot the Stingers 42-33, including a 24-13 margin in the middle stanza. The Redmen went 3-for 8 on the power play and tied a school single-game record with a pair of shorthanded goals as they snuffed out all 13 Concordia power-play opportunities, including a pair of two-man advantages. McGill has now scored eight times in OUA play while shorthanded, a single-season school record.

Ìý

Francis Verreault-Paul, a sophomore forward from Mashteuiatsh, Que., and linemate Alexandre Picard-Hooper of Boucherville, Que., were each credited with a goal and three assists. Verreault-Paul leads all OUA snipers in goals (20), points (43) and game-winners (6). Picard-Hooper leads the league in assists with 32 in 23 contests.

Ìý

Rounding out the scoring for the Redmen was senior Leonard Verrilli of Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., who had a pair, plus juniors Guillaume Doucet of Anjou, Que., and Simon Marcotte-Légaré of Longueuil, Que., in addition to rookie Maxime Langelier-Parent of Levy, Que., and Ben Gazdic, a veteran defenceman from Toronto.

Ìý

The eighth-place Stingers sit precariously in the final playoff berth with a 7-15-2 record, two points ahead of RMC and three ahead of Ottawa, who holds a game in hand. Concordia hosts division-leading UQTR on Feb. 3,

Ìý

McGill travels to third-place Carleton (13-8-3) on Feb. 5. The Redmen have dropped two of their three meetings with the pesky Ravens this season and a win would clinch second-place in the 10-team OUA East for McGill, which owns an 18-5 record, two points behind UQTR (18-3-2) with five games remaining before playoffs. The Redmen and Pats have split their season series and will meet for a rubber match on Feb. 8 in a rare Monday night affair.

Ìý

REDMEN RAP:Ìý The Redmen penalty-killing unit is second-best among all 19 OUA teams, erasing 130 of 146 PK situations for a stellar 89 per cent success rate... They trail Guelph, who leads with 89.9...Ìý Concordia leads the all-time series between the two clubs but the Redmen are closing in with an 77-89-14 overall record... The Stingers had previously racked up a once insurmountable 36-1-1 lead after the first 38 confrontations... The cross-town rivals will meet one more time in regular-season play when they hook-up at Meagher Arena on Feb. 12 for the 23rd annual Corey Cup game... McGill leads the nation with 130 goals, the fourth-highest offensive output in team history... The school record is 173 goalsÌý established over 26 contests in 1988-89... The Redmen have registered two other impressively potent campaigns, scoring 146 times in 1982-83 (30 games) and matching that total in 1999-00 (26 games)... Speedy rookie Christophe Longpre-Poirier leads the OUA in shorthanded points scored with three SHGs and a pair of helpers... Despite missing three games, sophomore Marc-Andre Dorion, who collected three helpers in the game, now leads all OUA rearguards in scoring with a 6-22-28 record in 20 games... He has a six-point lead on Brendan Sherrard of Queen's... McGill team captain Yan Turcotte has achieved career bests in goals, assists and points (7-12-19) with 100 penalty minutes in 23 games... The rugged rearguard, who last year became McGill's all-time penalty king, has reached the century mark in PIMs for the second straight year.
