JGH Director of Nursing Lynne McVey granted Prix Florence
Prestigious honour of the Order of Nurses of Quebec

Lynne McVey, JGH Director of Nursing, has been awarded the Prix Florence, among the most prestigious honours bestowed for outstanding professional achievement by the Order of Nurses of Quebec. Ms. McVey received her award in the Leadership category at a ceremony in Montreal May 5.

The OIIQ Prix Florence Leadership award highlights the exceptional contribution of a nurse whose achievements, qualities and personal and professional commitment have acted as a positive influence and are a source of motivation and inspiration.

In his letter of nomination, Dr. Hartley Stern, Executive Director of the JGH, described Ms. McVey as "a leader of the best sort: one who leads by example." Dr. Stern noted that her "staunch dedication to evidence-based nursing, combined with genuine compassion for patients in need" has enabled the JGH "to maintain a commendably low and stable nursing vacancy rate of just 3.7 per cent, despite a critical shortage of nurses throughout Quebec and across Canada." He also commended Ms. McVey for making better systems of risk management, error prevention and patient satisfaction intrinsic elements of the hospital's activities.

Ms. McVey, who is Co-Director of the Segal Cancer Center and an Associate Professor in the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ School of Nursing, joined the JGH in 1987. Soon afterward, she was appointed Nursing Director for Medicine, Mental Health, Geriatrics and Cancer Care Services, a position she held until 2006 when she became Director of Nursing. Ms. McVey has also been instrumental in the development and support of the JGH Centre for Nursing Research.

The Dean of the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ School of Nursing, Hélène Ezer, Ph.D., extols Ms. McVey in her letter of nomination as "a woman of vision and courage who has never hesitated to invest in the future; her contributions to the nursing sciences and to our School are exceptional. Her students portray her as an outstanding teacher, emphasizing the quality of her training and her ability to facilitate the progress of research and the transfer of knowledge." Dr. Ezer adds that Ms. McVey is generous with both her time and her ideas, offering unflagging support to her colleagues in the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ network and across Quebec.
