MONTREAL - Kelsey Irwin of Vancouver, B.C., earned all-tournament honours as the McGill women's volleyball team opened their pre-season schedule with a third-place finish at the Université de Montreal tournament over the weekend. The Martlets won three of their five matches, with each going the maximum five sets, despite having their wings clipped with a plethora of injuries which left them in a bind with no experienced setters.

Irwin, a six-foot middle blocker, racked up 53 kills and an equal number of digs in four matches before suffering an unspecified injury on Sunday. The fifth-year political science and sociology major also registered 15 stuff blocks, five assisted blocks and six aces.

McGill opened the tourney on Friday with a 3-2 decision over Windsor on Friday, winning by set scores of 25-11, 19-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-9. On Saturday, the Martlets were beaten by Guelph (17-25, 14-25, 25-20, 25-23, 11-15) in the morning match but bounced back that afternoon to edge the Western Ontario Mustangs 26-28, 25-16, 29-27, 21-25, 15-12 in a two-hour, 31-minute marathon.

Injuries played havoc with the lineup and McGill suffered a 3-2 loss to McMaster (14-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 8-15) on Sunday morning but rebounded to capture the bronze medal match over College Bois de Boulogne (25-14, 25-22, 27-29, 21-25, 15-3).

Three other players were knocked out of the lineup, including setters Marcela Mansure, a junior from Rio de Janiero and Marie-Christine Lapointe, a freshman from St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., who suffered a knee injury. Also down for the count was junior Kaiva Mateus, a six-foot-one middle blocker from Montreal West, who suffered a broken finger.

The Martlets have two weeks to heal up before heading to the nation's capital for the Ottawa-Marriott Preseason Classic tourney, Oct. 1-3.
