INDOOR SOCCER: Mental lapse causes collapse against Carabins
TROIS-RIVIERES, Que. – Forward Veronique Laverdiere exploded for
three goals in a seven-minute span as the Montreal Carabins
defeated McGill 3-1 in the Quebec women’s indoor soccer league
championship game on Sunday.
The Carabins became the first team to complete a sweep of the
outdoor and indoor seasons since McGill accomplished the feat in
2003.
Laverdiere tallied in the 34th, 37th and 44th minutes of
play.
Hannah Simmons tallied the lone McGill marker in the 57th minute of
play.
“We had a very good start and played well throughout first 30
minutes,” said head coach Marc Mounicot. “However we suffered a
mental lapse for 10 minutes Laverdiere made the difference.”
The Martlets had to rework their lineup in the wake of injuries to
midfielders Simmons, Laura Gibson and Maggie Keating last week
against Laval. To compound matters, they lost the services of
Carolyn Pelletier after the first goal.
“Our team was a bit disorganized after her injury and Montreal
merited the win because they were simply more opportunistic,” added
Mounicot. “It was a high quality game between two good teams and we
are pleased with our development over the last eight months. We
were able to respond to the challenge in a much better way than we
did four months ago when we lost in the playoffs last fall. We gave
them a game and overall, we had more ball possession but they have
a very solid defence.
Forward Magalie Kolker, who played the entire contest in the
midfield, was named as McGill’s player of the game. It was the
final game for Kolker, as well as fellow seniors Vanessa Salasky
and Catherine Boulay, all of whom are expected to graduation.
The Martlets will get a week off before preparing for a tour of
France in May.
