Hoyte named top rookie as five Martlets merit RSEQ soccer all-star status

MONTREAL - Alexandria Hoyte of Laval, Que., was named rookie of the year and is one of five women's soccer players from Ï㽶ÊÓƵ to earn all-conference status as the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec announced the league award winners Thursday.

Hoyte, a 5-foot-7 midfielder, made the RSEQ first squad along with teammates Julia Bahen, a second-year defender from Vancouver, B.C., and veteran forward Alexandra Morin-Boucher of St. Gabriel de Brandon, Que. Members of the Martlets selected to the second "dream team" included defender Kelsey Wilson of Pincourt, Que., and goaltender Victoria Muccilli of Mississauga, Ont.

Hoyte, a 19-year-old chemical engineering freshman, was second on the team in scoring with seven points, including three goals. She was also named as player of the game eight times in 14 contests. ÌýBahen, is a 5-foot-8 back who was the league's rookie of the year last season. The two-time all-star is a 20-year-old sophomore majoring in international development studies. Morin-Boucher, a 5-foot-6 striker, was second among league leaders in goals (9) and third in points (13). She is a 22-year-old physical education senior. Wilson, a 5-foot-6 psychology sophomore who started in 13 of mcGill's 14 games, played a major role in the team posting the second-best defensive record in the Quebec conference. Muccilli, a 5-foot-8, history sophomore from who posted a 7-0-1 record with four shutouts and a 0.13 goal-against average.

Other major award winners announced include Montreal Carabins forward Éva Thouvenot-Hébert, who was named player of the year and Samantha Juraschka of the Bishop's Gaiters, who received the conference nomination for best combining academics with athletics and citizenship. Ghislain Tapsoba of the UQTR Patriotes was chosen coach of the year.
