Hockey Redmen to host Gee-Gees in OUA playoff opener on Wednesday

Published: 15 February 2011

MONTREAL - The top-seeded McGill Redmen (24-2-2) will host eight-seeded Ottawa (11-14-3) when the OUA men's hockey best-of-three quarterfinals open at McConnell Arena on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Game 2 is scheduled to be played at the uOttawa Sports Complex on Friday at 7 p.m. If necessary, a rubber match will be at McConnell Arena on Sunday at 7 p.m. All games are slated to be webcast on the Streaming Sports Network ().

McGill, currently ranked No.2 in the nation with a 29-3-3 overall record, is the defending OUA Queen's Cup champion and participating in post-season play for the 25th time in 28 years.

Kelly Nobes, in his first season behind the McGill bench, has guided his squad to a school record win total (24) in league play, to go along with the top offensive record in the nation (5.04 goals per game) and the third-best defensive record (2.29). The lineup features the top CIS point-getter in Alexandre Picard-Hooper (11-47-58 in 28 games), the leading CIS goal-scorer in all-Canadian Francis Verreault-Paul (28-14-42 in 19 GP) and the highest-scoring rearguard in the CIS with all-Canadian Marc-Andre Dorion (8-29-37 in 25 GP), who was voted as the CIS most outstanding defenceman last year.

The Redmen roster, which includes 15 former players from the QMJHL, is composed of eight freshmen, five sophomores, nine juniors and three seniors. They have 19 players from Quebec and two from Ontario, plus one apiece from Saskatchewan, Alberta, B.C., and New York.

The Redmen have won 10 straight meetings with Ottawa dating back to a 3-2 loss on Feb. 20, 2009. This season, McGill swept all four confrontations, winning 8-2, 7-4 and 7-0 at McConnell Arena and coming away with a 3-2 overtime victory in the nation's capital. The Redmen had a 25-8 advantage in goals scored and outshot Ottawa 152-97 over the four games. McGill was 4-for-19 on the power play (21.1%), while the Gee-Gees were 1-for-18 (5.5%).

In playoff match-ups with Ottawa, McGill has won only four of nine previous series, prevailing in 11 of 24 games. In each of the last two times these teams clashed in the post-season (2006 and 2009), McGill dropped the opener but rallied to win both best-of-three series.
