Graske gets winner as Redmen stun No.4-ranked Carabins to qualify for Nationals

MONTREAL - Eugene Graske's scored in the 28th minute of play and Sami Obaid added an insurance marker in the 67th minute as visiting McGill upset the No.4-ranked Montreal Carabins 2-0 in a sudden-death men's soccer semifinal game, Friday.

听

It marked only the third time that Redmen had ever beaten the Carabins, who are 12-3-6 lifetime against McGill since joining the QUSL in 2001. All three victories have occurred during post-season play, including identical 1-0 victories in the 2007 semifinal and in the 2002 league championship contest

听

The long-standing bitter rivalry between the cross-town rivals manifested itself with seven yellow warning cards being issued along with three player ejections by referee Pierre Cantave.

听

Redmen 'keeper Jean-Lou Gosselin made four saves to register the shutout as McGill held an 8-4 edge in shots on net against Gerry Argento, who was saddled with the loss.

听

McGill now advances to the Quebec league championship contest against Laval on Sunday in Quebec City. Regardless of Sunday's outcome, both finalists have qualified for the CIS championships at UBC, Nov. 12-15.听 It will mark McGill's first appearance since 2004, when the Redmen finished second overall.
