MONTREAL - Striker Pilar Khoury of Ottawa scored the game-winner in the seventh minute of play as the Ottawa Gee-Gees blanked the McGill Martlets 2-0 to win the CIS women's soccer championship bronze medal game at Percival Molson Stadium, Sunday.
Ìý
It was the eighth medal in school history for the Gee-Gees, who have collected one gold, four silver and three bronze at the Nationals, posting a 15-12-4 record lifetime.
Ìý
"It was a great (pass) by Julia , right over the defensive line and I just got it on a breakaway and scored," said Khoury, a health sciences freshman who was selected player of the game for her side. "We were a little bit demoralized yesterday after the semifinal loss against Queen's but now it feels really good."
Ìý
Christine Hardie of Lyons Brook, N.S., added an insurance marker in the 41st minute to give her troops a 2-0 lead going into halftime. McGill (1-2) was unable to muster much of an offence in the second stanza and failed to score a regulation goal in the tournament (excluding an own goal and penalty kicks).
Ìý
McGill held a 16-14 advantage in shots attempted but only two of their shots reached the net.
Ìý
"Our legs weren't there today after a really tough semifinal against the Carabins last night," said McGill team captain Alexandra Morin-Boucher, a senior striker from St. Gabriel de brandon, Que. "The team was really tired but I think (with the upset over Trinity Western in the opener), we showed everybody that we are able to play in this tournament."
Ìý
Freshman goalkeeper Cynthia Leblanc, a 5-foot-6 native of Granby, Que., registered an impressive 11 saves for her second consecutive shutout. McGill 'keeper Victoria Muccilli, a sophomore from Mississauga, made five saves in a losing cause.
Ìý
"I'm very happy with our performance today," said Steve Johnson, head coach of the Gee-Gees who qualified as OUA bronze medalists. "McGill was playing in their own town and we knew that they would do everything they could to win, so it was a terrific effort by our team and a great way to end a season. "
Ìý
Julia Bahen, a third-year defender from Vancouver, B.C., was named as McGill's player of the game for the second time in three outings.
The Martlets, who qualified for the tourney as host team and finished with a 1-2 record, are now 16-25-5 in 18 lifetime appearances over the history of the 25-year CIS championship, which was first played on the McGill campus in 1987.
