Gaiters return favour, sweep McGill cagers
LENNOXVILLE – The Bishop’s Gaiters proved that there’s nothing
like some good home-cooking and bounced back from being swept by
McGill in Friday’s doubleheader in Montreal, returning the favour
with a pair of wins in Quebec University Basketball League play in
Lennoxville, Que., Saturday.
In the women’s game, the Gaiters cruised to an 84-50 romp over the
Martlets. In the nightcap, the Gaiters stunned the No. 9 Redmen,
with a come-from-behind 72-70 upset victory.
The win was the first in league play for Gaiters’ first-year head
coach Alex Perno.
Katy Germain of Val d’Or, Que., led the Gaiters with 18 points,
shooting 6-for-8 from the field. She scored seven of the Gaiters’
first nine points as Bishop’s took an early 9-4 lead, and never
looked back.
The Martlets closed to 11-10 after Stephanie Bergeron hit the third
of her three three-pointers in the quarter, but the Gaiters
responded with a 13-1 run to pull away, and took a 26-13 lead into
the second quarter. The Gaiters led by as many as 29 points and had
a comfortable 53-26 margin at halftime.
Bergeron led the Martlets with a game-high 19 points, on 7-for-16
shooting, including 5-of-10 from three-point range. Teammate
Anneth Him Lazarenko, a freshman from Ste. Dorothée, Que., tallied
13 to reach double digits in coring for the 11th straight contest.
The 5-foot-10 forward also posted a team-leading six
rebounds.
McGill shot a dismal 35.4 per cent from the field, 33.3 from the
arc and 55.6 from the foul line, compared to Bishop’s, which shot
57.4, a stellar 56.3 (9 of 16) and 72.4, respectively. The Gaiters
also enjoyed a 32-22 edge in rebounding, and forced 21 McGill
turnovers.
Eleven different players hit the scoresheet for the Gaiters, with
Germain’s 18 leading the charge. She was joined in double figures
by Melanie Ouellet-Godcharles (14 pts) of Gatineau, Que., and Jessy
Roy (13) of Val d’Or, Que. Roy also added seven assists,
while Laure Pitfield of Ottawa, collected a game-high eight
rebounds. Montreal native Gabrielle Côté-Caouette scored seven
points in 15 minutes as she made her QUBL debut.
The Gaiters improved to 4-6 overall and squared their regular
season mark at 1-1. They will host UQAM on Nov. 21. McGill, which
fell to 3-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play, will look to
rebound with a home-and-home affair against Laval, beginning Nov.
