Five snipers hit their mark as Martlets skunk Citadins

MONTREAL -- Five different players scored -- all in the second half -- as McGill blanked the UQAM Citadins 5-0 in women's university soccer at Molson Stadium, Sunday.

Ìý

After a lacklustre first half, the Martlets finally found their scoring touch, exploding for five markers in the final 35 minutes. McGill had a 7-2 edge in shots on net and a stunning 24-1 margin in crosses.

Ìý

Katherine Green, a senior from Calgary, netted what proved to be the game-winner in the 55th minute of play. Other marksmen included Algerian native Zohra Bendouah (65), freshman Julia Bahen (68) of Vancouver, freshman Laura Bland-Lasso (68) from Ottawa and Alexandra Armstrong (87), a rookie from London, Ont.

Ìý

"We had good possession and moved the ball around well but that does not guarantee a win," said Marc Mounicot, head coach of the Martlets. "I would have preferred us to play a more efficient game, moving forward and challenging much more on one-on-one situations and taking more advantage of all our crosses in the box. We must show more killer instinct and finish off our plays. It is a state of mind that we will need in the playoffs."

Ìý

Shimone Slomowitz, a sophomore from West Vancouver, made two saves for the shutout.

Ìý

McGill improved to 8-3-1 and now stand tied with Laval (8-3-1) for third place in the eight-team Quebec conference. With two games remaining before playoffs, the Martlets can finish anywhere from second to fourth. A second-place finish would allow them to host a semifinal game at Molson Stadium in early November.

Ìý

Second-place Sherbrooke (8-2-2) is only one point ahead of McGill. The Vert & Or will host Laval next Friday.Ìý A tie or a Laval victory would set the stage for the Martlets to clinch second-place but they will have to win their final two games on the road next weekend at Bishop's (1-8-3) and UQTR (3-7-2).
