QUEBEC CITY – Catherine Drouin-Audet of Repentigny, Que., won three gold medals for McGill and teammate Alana Battiston of Toronto, broke a school record to highlight the Quebec university track and field championships, a two-day competition, held at the PEPS Fieldhouse in Quebec City over the weekend.

Two other McGill athletes, Miguel Mangalindon, a junior from Toronto, and senior Stéphanie Harris of Calgary, were honoured as the male and female athletes, respectively, who best combine academics with athletics and community service.

Sherbrooke took the men’s title for the 11th consecutive year with 170 points, followed by Laval (99) and McGill (82). On the women’s side, the Vert & Or finished atop the podium for the second straight season with 157.7, followed by McGill (124), Laval (47) and Montreal (9.5).

Drouin-Audet, a sophomore in nutrition & dietetics, was clocked in one minute, 39.75 seconds to reign as Quebec champion of the 600-metre race. The 5-foot-3, middle-distance runner also ran the lead-off leg of the winning 4x800 relay (10:18.66) and anchored the winning 4x400 (4:10.15)

Battiston, a physiology junior who was also part of the winning 4x400, racked up 3,321 points in the pentathlon, breaking the previous McGill mark of 3204 points, set by Battiston at Sherbrooke last year.

The only other McGill athletes to win individual gold were freshmen Mélanie Myrand (3000m, 10:31.16) of Pointe Claire, Que., and Dong Liu, a native of China, who took the men’s 60m hurdles in 8.78 seconds.

Other members of McGill’s winning relays included Alison Cameron-Vendrig of Ottawa and Hilary Kellar-Parsons of London, Ont., on the 4x400, plus Brittany Therrien of Victoria, B.C., Anne Ruggirello of Glenview, Illinois and Heather McCurdy of Belleville, Ont., on the 4x800.

Sherbrooke walked away with nine of 12 major awards, including Pierre Puvjalon and Pascal Delisle, who were named as the male and female athletes of the meet, respectively.
The indoor season culminates with the CIS national championships, slated to be held at the University of Windsor, March 12-14.
