Dr. Marla Shapiro named Honorary Chair of inaugural Goodman Cancer Research Gala McGill alum, physician, media personality and cancer survivor takes honorary helm of June fundraising event
Ï㽶ÊÓƵ's Faculty of Medicine and Rosalind and Morris Goodman are pleased to announce that Dr. Marla Shapiro has been named the Honorary Chair of the inaugural Goodman Cancer Research Gala. The gala, in support of the Goodman Cancer Research Centre, will be take place at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ on Saturday, June 5, 2010.
"In 2004 my life took a new direction when I was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. As a physician and cancer patient, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of world class cancer centres that bring research and state of the art science to the ultimate benefit of people such as me," said Dr. Shapiro. "The Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Research Centre is truly a research facility with a mission to be the best in the world. It is a great honour to participate in the Goodman Cancer Research Gala as we raise funds to meet this goal."
Dr. Shapiro obtained her medical degree from McGill (MDCM '79) and is best known as the medical consultant for CTV National News and Canada AM, as host of Balance: Television for Living Well and her bi-weekly column in The Globe and Mail. She is a Certificant of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and a Specialist in Community Medicine. Currently, she is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto and has her own family practice.
This prestigious fundraising event will bring together many of Montreal's successful, influential citizens and other high profile individuals from across Canada who are committed to advancing cancer research. Dr. Bernard Shapiro (who is of no relation to Dr. Marla Shapiro), member of the Orders of both Canada and Quebec and Principal Emeritus of McGill, will serve as Dinner Chair. He will be joined by Master of Ceremonies Derek Drummond, Gala Chair Penny Echenberg and Gala Fundraising Chair Marvin Corber.
The Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Research Centre (GCRC) is affiliated with Ï㽶ÊÓƵ's Faculty of Medicine and is located within the core of Montreal's major hospital area. It conducts and coordinates internationally renowned independent basic cancer research programs at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ and its affiliated hospitals. The GCRC focuses its activities and innovations on developing and implementing programs that integrate fast-tracking fundamental research, training for students, postdoctoral fellows, professionals and employees, as well as the promotion of cancer information to the general public.
