Double-double spells toil and trouble for Martlets
By John Edwards, Bishop’s & Earl Zukerman, McGill
MONTREAL – A "double-double" by Amanda Piribauer of Kingston, Ont.,
her fourth of the season, led the Bishop’s women to a 50-38 win
over the Martlets in university hoops action at Love Competition
Hall, Saturday. Piribauer scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds
as the Gaiters prevailed in a tight defensive struggle.
The first half became a defensive struggle, with both teams having
difficulty getting their offences untracked. An 8-0 McGill run in
the first quarter allowed them to lead 8-6 after 10 minutes. The
Gaiters regained the lead with 3:35 left in the half as Piribauer’s
15-footer put the Gaiters up 13-11, and BU took a 15-13 lead into
halftime. The Gaiters shot 7-for-32 in the first half, while McGill
was good on only five of their 31 shots.
Bishop’s started to find the basket early in the second half, as a
pair of Piribauer layups and a three-pointer from Katy Germain of
Val d’Or, Que., put BU up 22-13 two minutes into the half. The
Gaiters were never threatened through the remainder of the game, as
McGill was unable to draw any closer than six points. The Gaiters
shot 52.6 per cent in the second half (10-for-19), while McGill
continued to struggle, hitting only 26% of their shots.
Piribauer’s 17 points led all scorers, while Germain finished with
14. Piribauer’s 13 rebounds were also a game-high, with Jessy Roy
of Val d’Or, Que., Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles of Gatineau, Que.,
and Robyn Wilson of Vancouver, B.C., grabbed six each. Roy also had
five assists.
For McGill, Nathifa Weekes scored 12 points, while Stephanie
Bergeron added nine and Anneth Him-Lazarenko scored eight.
The Gaiters outrebounded McGill 47-23, and outshot McGill 33.3 per
cent to 20.7. Bishop’s was 13-for-15 from the free-throw line,
including 12-for-12 in the second half, while McGill was perfect on
all 11 attempts from the charity stripe.
The win kept Bishop’s (6-4) in a tie for second place with UQAM,
who swept Concordia over the weekend.
McGill (3-7) remained in fourth place, two points ahead of
cellar-dwelling Concordia. The Martlets will host UQAM on Thursday,
Jan. 29 in the first of a home-and-home series. The follow-up
affair is slated for Saturday evening.
The Gaiters next action is a series against first-place Laval
(7-1), who were idle over the weekend. Friday’s game is set for
Quebec City, with the return match in Lennoxville on Saturday
night.
