Desmond Manderson shortlisted for Klibansky Book Prize

Published: 13 November 2007

Canada Research Chair in Law and Discourse Desmond Manderson's book (MQUP, 2007) has been shortlisted by the for the Raymond Klibansky Prize for best English-language book in the humanities. It is unusual for a law book to be nominated for a humanities prize.

In his book, linking the controversial ethical philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas and the common law legal tradition that has recently invigorated the idea of "the duty of care," Desmond Manderson argues that ethicists and lawyers struggle with the same basic questions of why we should care for others and what responsibility really demands of us, using the same language of care, neighbourhood and proximity.

Established in 1990, the Scholarly Book Prizes recognize Canadian excellence in research and writing in the humanities and the social sciences, and acknowledge the significant contribution that Canadian scholarly books make to the advancement of knowledge.

These awards are administered by the Federation's Aid to Scholarly Publications Program (ASPP), which provides financial support for the publication of manuscripts authored by Canadian scholars. A cross-Canada jury of eminent scholars selects the best ASPP-funded books published each year. This program is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

The winners will be announced at a reception on November 24, 2007, in Ottawa. Professor Manderson's friends and colleagues at the Faculty of Law wish him the best of luck!
