Desfossés, Davidson named Quebec athletes of the week
MONTREAL – Kevin Desfossés of Beauport, Que., and Vanessa Davidson
of Kirkland, Que., are the Quebec Student Sport Federation's
athletes of the week for the period ending March 8, 2009.
Desfossés, a six-foot, 185-pound goaltender with the hockey Redmen,
kicked aside 61 of 63 shots as McGill swept No.5-ranked UQTR in two
straight games last week to capture the OUA East Conference title
and earn a berth in both the league championship game and
subsequently, the CIS national tournament. The 21-year-old
management freshman posted a stellar .968 save percentage and a
stingy 1.00 goals-against average while registering both victories.
Desfossés joined the Redmen in January after earning all-star
honours with the QMJHL’s Quebec Remparts and a playing stint in
Port Huron of the International Hockey League.
Davidson, a 24-year-old centre with the Martlets hockey team,
scored eight points in two games as McGill swept their conference
semifinal series against Concordia last week to reach the league
championship series and qualify for the CIS championships. The
5-foot-8 physical education senior had one goal and four assists in
an 11-2 win in Game 1 and added a goal with a pair of assists in a
4-1 victory to clinch the series. Davidson, who won gold with Team
Canada at the world university games in China last month,
previously attended John Abbott College before enrolling at McGill
in 2005.
It marks the eighth and ninth Quebec weekly conference selection of
the season for McGill athletes. The list of previous recipients
includes and Martlet forward Ann-Sophie Bettez, who was named three
times (Jan. 19/09, Nov. 19/08 and Oct. 21/08). Other McGill picks
include swimmer Steven Bielby (Feb. 23), cager Moustafa El
Zanaty (Jan. 27), rearguard Cathy Chartrand (Jan. 6, 2009) and
goaltender Danny Mireault (Nov. 19. 2008).
