Coré and Anderson named McGill athletes of the week

MONTREAL -- Melissa Coré, of Beaconsfield, Que., and Austin Anderson of Canmore, Alta., has been selected as the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ athletes of the week, for the period ending Oct. 4, 2009.

Coré won the Quebec university individual golf championship at Club Deux-Montagnes over the weekend, helping the Martlets to a second-place finish overall. The 23-year-old post-graduate student in management, shot rounds of 71, 76 and 76 in rainy conditions to finish the season with an overall score of 300 after her previous best round of 77 was factored in. She won the QSSF crown by five strokes, beating out Laurence Mignault from the Montreal Carabins. Coré, who becomes the first McGill golfer to capture the conference title, is a 2008 graduate of UBC, who previously attended John Abbott College.

Anderson, a 5-foot-10, 162-pound place-kicker with the football Redmen, accounted for 13 of McGill's 21 points and kicked the game-winning 28-yard field goal in wet, slippery conditions, with just 41 seconds remaining as the visiting Redmen rallied to edge Bishop's 21-19 at Lennoxville, Saturday. Anderson, a 20-year-old finance sophomore, went 4-for-4 in field goal attempts, including others from distances of 25, 23 and 43 yards. He is a product of Canmore Collegiate high school in Alberta.
