Concordia stings Redmen in sudden-death baseball playoff

COTE ST. LUC, Que. - Marco Masciotra of Kirkland, Que., went 4-for-4 with one walk, a double and four runs batted in as Concordia blanked the defending national champion McGill Redmen 9-0 to win the rubber match of the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association North Division best-of-three semifinal series. The teams split a doubleheader on Saturday, with McGill winning the opener 9-3 and Concordia bouncing back to take the nightcap 5-2.

The Stingers now advance to the best-of-three divisional final against Carleton, beginning at Trudeau Park on Oct. 15. More importantly, they earned an automatic berth to the CIBA national championship tournament in Moncton, N.B., Oct. 21-23.

Brandon Berkovits tossed a complete game masterpiece, scattering six hits over seven innings of work. He struck out nine and walked one. The Stingers amassed 13 hits and four walks off four McGill pitchers.

Daniel Kost-Stephenson, who was voted the league's pitcher of the year last season, started and took the loss. He allowed four hits and three earned runs in three innings, striking out three and walking one.

The Stingers led 2-0 after one inning, 3-0 after two and 4-0 heading into the sixth inning, when they exploded for four runs to blow the game wide open.

The only multi-hit player for the Redmen was leadoff batter Luis Argumedes, a freshman shortstop from Anjou, Que., who went 2-for-3.

McGill finished their disappointing campaign with a 7-11-1 record overall, including a suspended game that was called due to inclement weather with a 3-3 tie in the 10th inning.
