CIS Men's Hockey Top 10 (#1): Redmen open at No.2 in the nation

OTTAWA (CIS) - The McGill men's hockey team is ranked second in the first CIS men's hockey poll of the 2011-12 season.

Ìý

UNB, the reigning national champs, opens the campaign atop the rankings for the third time in five years, each time following a University Cup triumph (2011, 2009, 2007). The V-Reds captured the fourth CIS title in program history last March in Fredericton thanks to a 4-0 gold-medal win over the McGill Redmen, and hope for a repeat performance in six months when they once again host the University Cup tournament, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Twelfth-year head coach Gardiner MacDougall and his troops are off to a solid start again this fall. After racking up five wins, two losses and a tie in pre-season action, including a perfect 4-0 mark versus CIS opponents, the V-Reds opened AUS conference play this past weekend with a pair of 3-1 home victories over the St. Francis Xavier X-Men and the Saint Mary's Huskies.

Ìý

UNB earned 15 of 17 first-place votes and 165 points from the media panel this week, with No. 2 McGill (141 points) and the No. 3 Manitoba Bisons (131) each receiving one of the remaining first-place nods.

Ìý

Rounding out the first Top 10 of the campaign are the No. 4 Acadia Axemen (99 points), No. 5 Saskatchewan Huskies (89), No. 6 Western Ontario Mustangs (83), No. 7 StFX (70), No. 8 Alberta Golden Bears (53), No. 9 Nipissing Lakers (43) and No. 10 Waterloo Warriors (22).

Ìý

McGill begins in second place for the second straight season. The two-time defending OUA champion Redmen, who made their first-ever appearance in the CIS final last spring, are off to a 4-0 start in conference play, including a two-game sweep of perennial powerhouse Lakehead in Thunder Bay and a pair of home wins over Windsor.

Ìý

Manitoba opens at No. 3 for the second time in three years, a position that matches the highest ranking in team history. The Bisons have been impressive so far in the regular season with a pair of two-game road sweeps against Calgary and Alberta, the 2010-11 Canada West finalist and champion, respectively.

Ìý

Also of note in the opening poll is the lowest ranking for Alberta since the Golden Bears were eighth on Oct. 28, 1996 (second poll of 1996-97). The Bears (2-1-1), who have won 10 of the last 11 Canada West titles, had not been ranked lower than fourth in the country in the last 14 seasons (1997-98 to 2010-11).

Ìý

NOTES: UNB was ranked No. 1 in the last 11 national polls of 2010-11 and has topped 43 of the last 65 polls (.662) since 2006-07...
