Chartrand, Thornhill named McGill athletes of week
MONTREAL – Cathy Chartrand of Lac Nominingue, Que., and Matt
Thornhill of Ile-Bizard, Que., are the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ athletes
of the week for the period ending Jan. 4.
Chartrand, a member of the No.1-ranked Martlets hockey team, was
the top scoring defenceman at Concordia’s Theresa Humes tournament.
The 27-year-old physical education sophomore scored eight points,
including three goals. A former member of the Canadian national
team, the 5-foot-10 blueliner tallied two game-winners and assisted
on another winning goal as the Martlets swept all three contests to
capture the tourney for the third straight year. She is currently
the fourth-leading scorer on the Martlets with nine goals and 29
points in 21 games overall. Chartrand previously attended College
Saint-Laurent.
Thornhill, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound guard with the men’s basketball
team, was named to the all-tournament team at UQAM’s Classique des
Citadins men's basketball tournament, Dec. 28-29. The 22-year-old
finance junior tallied 30 points in a win over UNB and added 22
more in a victory over RMC, including his 1,000th career point with
the Redmen. Over the two tourney games, he registered 52 points
with eight rebounds and shot 58.8 per cent from the floor (20/34),
52.4 from three-point range (11-for-21) and 33.3 from the charity
stripe (1/3). He joined the Redmen in 2006 out of Dawson
College.
