MONTREAL - Defenceman Cathy Chartrand of Lac Nominingue, Que., scored once and added a pair of assists as the No. 1-ranked McGill Martlets rallied for a 5-2 victory over No.6-Montreal in Quebec University Hockey League action at McConnell Arena, Wednesday.

It was the 83rd consecutive victory against QUHL opponents for McGill, which outshot the Carabins 50-24.

Kim Deschenes of Saint Quentin, N.B., and Stephanie Daneau of Drummondville, Que., had given the Carabins a 2-1 lead after the opening period but the Martlets scored four unanswered goals in the last 23 minutes for the victory.

Chartrand, a 5-foot-10 blueliner who was voted conference MVP last year, assisted on the tying goal by Kim Ton-That, a sophomore from Beaconsfield, Que., at 17:17 of the middle stanza.

Sophomore Darragh Hamilton of Ormstown, Que., tallied the game-winner at 11:01 of the third and Chartrand put the game out of reach with 2:38 remaining in the contest. She then assisted on a shorthanded empty-net marker by Carly Hill of Dorval, Que., with 55 seconds left on the clock.

The game's first goal was scored by McGill rookie rearguard Gillian Ferrari of Thornhill, Ont., on a patented blueline blast.

Goaltender Andrea Weckman, a sophomore from Kitchener, Ont., made 22 saves for the win, while her counterpart at the other end of the ice, Katrina Giuliani of Chateauguay, Que., registered 45 saves in a losing cause.

The Martlets, who improved to 2-0 in league play and 4-0 against CIS opponents, will head south of the border this weekend for games at Dartmouth (Oct. 22) and Harvard (Oct. 23). McGill is 2-4-1 vs NCAA opponents this season and were 3-4-0 the year before.

The Carabins, who dropped 0-1-1 in QUHL play, will host the Ottawa Gee-Gees (0-2) on Saturday afternoon.

MARTLET MURMURS: Carly Hill, who had two points in the game, needed a crash course in where the home penalty box was located. the fifth-year senior was penalized for hooking early in the second period and proceeded to the visitor's penalty box, only to be told by the minor officials that she had to move to the other sin-bin. It's not like this was the first time that the wily forward-turned defenceman had been penalized. In 207 career games with the Martlets, she has a 33-71-104 record with 124 penalty minutes.
