MONTREAL - Casey Auerbach of Westmount, Que., had four hits and drove in four runs as McGill swept their best-of-three semifinal series with a pair of 8-2 and 7-3 victories over visiting Carleton in the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association playoffs at Pierre Elliott Trudeau Park, Saturday.

McGill had their hitting shoes on snugly, out-hitting the Ravens by a 22-10 margin in the two games. The opener was never in doubt as McGill jumped into a commanding 6-0 lead with back-to-back three-run innings, then upped their lead to 8-0 after three.

Starting pitcher Conrad Hall, a sophomore from Pte. Claire, Que., allowed only two runs and scattered three hits over 6.1 innings for the victory. He struck out five but walked four and hit three batters before giving way in the final inning to freshman reliever Brian Cook of Barrington, R.I., who put out a mini-fire and got the final two outs.

In the nightcap, Carleton broke up a scoreless battle with a run in the top of the third inning, but McGill rallied with one in the bottom of the inning and exploded for another pair of back-to-back three-run innings, to take a 7-2 lead after five. Redmen pitching ace Daniel Kost-Stephenson, also from Westmount, was tagged with the win. In five innings of work, he allowed three runs on six hits, to go with five strike-outs and four walks. He was relieved by rookie Daniel Porter of Coaticook, Que., and veteran Montrealer Anthony Carbone, both of whom allowed one hit in an inning of work.

Second baseman Max Tierno, shortstop Alex Day, the aforementioned Auerbach and designated-hitter Justin Cloutier, the top four batters in the order, respectively, hit for a combined .357 average in the doubleheader, with 10 hits in 28 at bats.

"We were confident in our pitching staff," said Auerbach, an English junior, who was moved from his regular spot at first base to right-field as an injury to catcher Josh Gordon necessitated his move to first base. "Carleton played us tough all year but we still swept the season series. We saw the ball real well and collectively had a good day at the plate."

The pennant-winning Redmen advance to the divisional championship series, a best-of-three affair, against cross-town rival Concordia, the defending CIBA champions. The series is scheduled to begin with a doubleheader on Oct. 16. If a rubber match is needed, it is slated for Oct. 17. All three games will be played at Pierre Elliott Trudeau Park, which serves as the home field to both teams, in Cote St. Luc.
