Carabins edge Martlets for indoor soccer championship

TROIS-RIVIERES -- The Montreal Carabins defeated McGill 2-1 to capture the 2011 Quebec women's indoor soccer crown at the Centre Alphonse-Desjardins in Trois-Rivieres, Sunday.
Ìý
Montreal opened the scoring in the 40th minute when Isabelle Dumais redirected a corner kick from Emmanuelle Béliveau-Labrecque past McGill goalkeeper Victoria Mucilli who got a piece of it. The ball, however, deflected off the crossbar and into the net.
Ìý
Véronique Laverdière made it 2-0 on a counter-attack in the 65th minute on a play set up by Dumais. Laverdière's shot hit the post and bounced back off McGill defender Rioux into the net.
Ìý
"We had to play catch up and open some spaces in the second half," said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot. "We kept pushing but Montreal was well-organized and defended their goal well."
Ìý
Hannah Simmons potted the lone McGill goal, spoiling Sarah Thérien's shutout bid some three minutes into injury time. The goal was set up by Alexandra Morin-Boucher, who had missed two great scoring chances in the first half. She hit the post on a breakaway and was robbed on another shot, which was saved on the goal-line a few minutes later.
Ìý
"It was a close game and each team was well-prepared and brought their best effort," said Mounicot. "We had more control on possession but most of our crosses were not efficient because of the quality of Montreal's air-game. Our inexperience was the difference between winning and losing. We are young and still have not learned how to close out a tight game."
Ìý
It marked the third consecutive year that the cross-town rivals had met in the indoor final. Each time, the Carabins have come away victorious. Since 2007, Montreal has beaten McGill in six straight games, combining the fall and indoor seasons.
Ìý
"They have developed a winning mentality that we are still looking for," added Mounicot, who started six freshman in the championship game. "But it was a great year for us, especially with such a young team"
Ìý
The Martlets had registered a 6-0-1 record during the indoor season, before going 1-1 in playoffs. last fall, they posted a 9-0-5 record during the outdoor season before losing to Laval in a sudden-death semifinal.
Ìý
"We need to keep working hard, find four or five key recruits for our roster," noted Mounicot.Ìý "We will host the CIS championships next fall and and this year has prepared us well."
