Carabins deliver knockout punch to soccer Martlets
MONTREAL â A goal in the 75th minute by Marylise Monchalin held
up as the No.1-ranked Montreal Carabins defeated McGill 1-0 in a
Quebec university womenâs soccer semifinal at CEPSUM Stadium,
Friday.
The result snapped McGillâs five-game win streak and erased what
wouldâve been an automatic berth to the CIS championships in Ottawa
next week.
The Carabins, who had already qualified for Nationals by finishing
first in the conference, will host Sherbrooke in the league
championship game on Sunday afternoon. In the wake of McGillâs
loss, the Vert & Or have now earned the second QUSL berth at
Nationals. They advanced to the league final with a convincing 4-1
victory over Laval in the other semifinal.
Monchalin, a 20-year-old sophomore, converted a long downfield pass
from VĂ©ronique Maranda and bounced it past McGill âkeeper,
Anne-Catherine Huot, a sophomore from Quebec City, for the
game-winning tally.
Martine Julien was only called upon twice to make a save and earned
the shutout for the Carabins.
âMontreal deserves the win. We had a strong first half but the
Carabins were able to step it up a notch in the last 45 minutes,â
said McGill head coach Marc Mounicot.
âWe were (hemmed) in our own half for most of the game. As a
result, we were only able to play long balls and unable to impose
our short passing game. Even with the addition of more
offensive-minded (substitutions) in the last 15 minutes, we were
unable generate much offence.
âWe dominated most teams during the season, but Montreal is
stronger than any opposition we faced. Nonetheless, we improved
drastically since training camp started in mid-August and our
mid-season win against Montreal was the highlight of the season and
confirmation that this young team has a bright future and can
challenge any strong CIS program.â
It was a highly physical game, as has become the norm between these
fierce cross-town rivals. McGillâs Caroline Pelletier received a
yellow card in the 59th minute for roughing. Montrealâs Maranda was
carded in the 68th minute for pushing McGill defender Liz Williams
after the whistle and Montrealâs Monchalin was booked for holding
in the 74th minute.
MARTLET MURMURS: The Martlets are expecting to lose three key
seniors to graduation: midfielder Vanessa Salasky (BA â09) of
Norfolk, Va., defender Tania Giannone (BSc â09) of Lorraine, Que.,
and Magalie Kolker (BCom â09), a striker from West Vancouver.
