DAYTON, Ohio -- Sam Bloom gave the home-town crowd an early boost when he notched the first goal, shorthanded, in franchise history at 6:07 of the opening period but it wasn't enough as his Dayton Gems dropped their International Hockey League debut 4-3 in overtime to the visiting Fort Wayne Komets, before 2,789 at Hara Arena, Friday.

Bloom, the McGill grad who had been released by the AHL's Cincinnati Cyclones earlier in the week, raced down the left wing and beat Komets goaltender Nick Boucher with a quick wrist shot to the far side for a 1-0 lead.

Dayton squandered a two-goal third-period to force the overtime session.
