MONTREAL – Four McGill teams are ranked among the CIS Top 10 national rankings this week, including women's hockey (No.1), men's hockey (2), Redmen swimming (10) and Martlet basketball (10), which has cracked the Top 10 for the first time in 14 years.

The Martlet hoopsters improved to 10-1 after a 65-58 victory over Laval last Friday, with a 21-point performance from Natalie Larocque. They find themselves nationally ranked for the first time since March 4, 1997. This week, McGill plays at UQAM and Bishop's, Feb. 11 and 12, respectively.

In women’s hockey, McGill improved to 15-0 in conference play and ran their extended win streak to 97-0 against league opponents, after a slim 2-1 win over Carleton last Saturday. All-Canadian rearguard Cathy Chartrand tallied the game-winner with only 45 seconds remaining in the third period. This week, they play at Concordia on Feb. 11 before hosting Ottawa the next day.

In men’s hockey, McGill (22-2-2) remained as the No.2-ranked team for the fourth straight week. Playing without six regulars, the Redmen were blanked 3-0 by Carleton in their lone outing last week. That result, combined with a 4-0 loss to the Ravens on Jan. 29, marked the first time in 107 years (1903-04 season) that McGill had suffered back-to-back shutouts in conference play. Three of McGill's top players spent the past two weeks with the Canadian squad that claimed bronze at the Winter Universiade in Turkey. The Redmen will welcome them back for the final weekend of the campaign when they host Ottawa on Friday before playing at Concordia for the 24th annual Corey Cup game on Sunday afternoon.

In men’s swimming, McGill remained 10th in the nation but did not compete last week. They have been idle since a third-place finish in their last competition on Jan.29. This weekend, they will be shaving down in preperation for the Quebec championship meet at the Universite de Montreal, Feb. 12-13.

In women’s volleyball, UBC remained No.1, while the Montreal Carabins leapfrogged over Laval after sweeping McGill 3-0 last Saturday. This weekend, the second-place Carabins will have home-court advantage in a best-of-three semifinal series gainst mcGill, which finished third with a 10-10 record. The series opens at the Centre CEPSUM on Friday at 7 p.m., moves to McGill on Saturday at 6 p.m. If a rubber match is needed, it is slated to be held back at U de M on Sunday at 2 pm.

In men’s volleyball, the Laval Rouge et Or sit atop the Top 10 for the sixth straight week after going undefeated in Quebec conference play for the third consecutive season. Laval swept Sherbrooke in straight sets last Friday to finish the regular schedule with an unblemished 17-0 record. The Rouge et Or are currently riding a 61-game winning streak in conference play and Quebec playoff action dating back to the 2007-08 campaign (including interlock play versus the AUS).
Laval enjoys a bye in the RSEQ semifinals and will face either Sherbrooke or Montreal in the best-of-three Quebec final starting on Feb. 18. The Rouge et Or are already qualified for the CIS championship to be hosted by Trinity Western in Langley, B.C., from March 4 to 6.
The men’s volleyball regular season comes to an end this weekend in the three other CIS conferences.
