Bielby wins triple gold, named swimmer of year

Published: 8 February 2009

By Earl Zukerman

MONTREAL – McGill’s Steven Bielby, a 19-year-old electrical engineering freshman from Pointe Claire, Que., won three gold medals and three silvers to capture both, conference rookie-of-the-year and athlete-of-the-year honours at the Quebec university swim championships hosted by McGill over the weekend.

No records fell at the two-day meet, held at Memorial pool, a 25-metre facility located in the McGill Sports Centre.

Bielby took the 400-metre freestyle (4:00.11), the 400 individual medley (4:25.29) and swam the third leg of the winning 4x50 freestyle relay (1:34.14). He placed second in the 200 butterfly, the 1500 freestyle and the 4x100 freestyle relay.

Adam Szoo and Myriam Plante, both from Université Laval, each won five gold medals and earned swimmer-of- the-meet honours as the Rouge et Or swept the men’s and women’s Quebec Student Sports Federation titles. Szoo, a 20-year-old junior from Calgary, also had a pair of second-place finishes. Plante, a 19-year-old freshman from Quebec City, was named as the conference’s female rookie of the year.

Canadian Olympian Jennifer Carroll, who won four golds for the Université du Quebec a Trois-Rivières, was crowned as the league’s female athlete of the year.

Nicholas Perron, who guided Laval to victory in both the men’s and women’s divisions, was named coach of the year for both categories.

The final league meet of the season counted for 60 per cent towards team scores in the overall conference standings. The previous four Coupe de Quebec meets each counted for 10 per cent.

On the women’s side, Laval also had the top medal haul with 24, winning 17 of 21 gold medals issued. UQTR finished atop the podium three times and Sherbrooke earned the other gold.

McGill placed second with 21 medals, including 11 silvers and 10 bronzes.

Things were spread out a little more in the men’s medal count, but Laval was still the top medal winner with 27, taking 11 gold, 10 silvers and six bronzes. The Montreal Carabins had 22 medals (six gold) and the Redmen were third with 12 medals, four of them gold.

Diego Pessoa, a freshman from Sao Paulo, Brazil, garnered the other solo gold for McGill, prevailing as the men’s 50m champion with a clocking of 23.63 seconds. He also earned silvers in three different relays.

Pessoa also swam leadoff on the 4x50 freestyle relay, which was composed of sophomore Sam Thrall of Oakville, the aforementioned Bielby and Sean Bell of Barrie, Ont.

Thrall (one relay gold, three relay silvers) and Kevin Harmidy (two silvers, two bronzes) of Kirkland, Que., were among the other Redmen medal winners.

The McGill women were led by a six-medal performance from captain Danielle Hetherington, a senior from Richmond Hill, Ont., who had three silvers and an equal number of bronzes.

Sophomore Caitlin Berry, a backstroker from Sackville, N.B., and freshman Leanne Roach, a breaststroker from Riverview, N.B., each came away with four second-place performances and a third-place finish.

Rookie Valérie Grand’Maison, a 20-year-old sensation who joined the Martlets last month after being Canada’s most decorated athlete at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing with six medals, had four podium finishes for McGill, including three second-place results.
