Bielby, Roach named McGill athletes of the week

MONTREAL – Swimmers Steven Bielby of Pointe Claire, Que., and Leanne Roach of Riverview, N.B., are the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 12, 2008.

Bielby, a 19-year-old electrical engineering freshman, won two events as McGill finished second of five teams at the season-opening Quebec Cup university swim meet, a two-day event held in Sherbrooke last weekend. Bielby, a 5-foot-7 sprinter, qualified for the CIS national championships with gold medal swims in both the 200-metre butterfly (2:07.20) and the 400 freestyle (4:00.74). Also, his leadoff time (1:53.52) in the silver-medal winning 4x200 freestyle relay was good enough to qualify for the CIS championships in the 200 free. Bielby, who joined McGill out of John Abbott College, also swam the third leg of the 4x50 freestyle relay which placed second in 1:34.73.

Roach, an 18-year-old freshman, posted a personal best time to win the 200-metre breaststroke in two minutes, 39.47 seconds to qualify for the CIS Nationals. The 5-foot-8 science major also won silver with the 4x200 freestyle relay (9:05.09) as the Martlets finished second of six teams at the Quebec Cup meet.
