Bielby, McCuaig named McGill athletes of the week

MONTREAL - Steven Bielby of Pte. Claire, Que., and Sarah McCuaig from Waterloo, Ont., are the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ athletes of the week for the period ending Feb. 27, 2011.

Bielby, a 21-year-old electrical engineering junior, won two gold medals at the CIS swim championships in Calgary over the weekend to merit all-Canadian honours and earn an invitation to represent Canada in August at the 2011 FISU Summer Games in Shenzhen, China. The 5-foot-8 middle-distance specialist won the 200-metre individual medley, establishing Quebec conference and McGill records with a time of 2:00.24. He also won the 400m individual medley, posting a time of 4:13.50 which counted for 818 FINA points in the world rankings, the second highest point score of any swimmer at the CIS meet. In three trips to the CIS championships, Bielby has now won a school record six gold medals, to go along with one silver and a pair of bronze medals. Prior to enrolling at McGill in 2008, he graduated from John Abbott College.

McCuaig, a 5-foot-10 middle-distance runner with the track team, won four gold medals and earned all-conference honours while leading McGill to a second-place finish at the Quebec university track and field championships in Quebec City over the weekend. The 21-year-old physiology sophomore finished first in the 1000m (2:56.19) and the 1500m (4:38.58). She also led McGill to victory in a pair of relays - the 4x400 (4:03.54) and 4x800 (9:16.87). ÌýMcCuaig is a product of Sir John A. Macdonald secondary school.
