By Earl Zukerman
MONTREAL – Steven Bielby of Pointe Claire, Que., won two gold
medals and a silver as the McGill Redmen finished third at the
second Quebec Cup swim meet of the season, held in Quebec City,
Saturday.
Laval captured the men’s division with 202 points, followed by
Montreal (88), McGill (63), Sherbrooke (13) and UQTR (7).
Bielby, a 5-foot-7 freshman, won the 400-metre individual medley in
four minutes, 24.21 seconds, the third fastest time in school
history. The 19-year-old electrical engineering major also captured
the grueling 1500m freestyle in 15:54.37 -- the second quickest
time in McGill history -- and anchored the 4x200 freestyle relay to
bronze in 3:33.27.
Other members on the relay included leadoff sprinter Jason Boivin,
a freshman from Pointe Claire, followed by sophomore Sam Thrall of
Oakville, Ont., and junior Diego Passoa, a native of Sao Paulo,
Brazil.
The only other Redmen medalist on the day was freshman Matthew
Khatchadourian of Beaconsfield, Que., who was clocked at 30.31
seconds in the 50m breaststroke, good enough for third place.
The swim team will send a few members to a Canada Cup meet in
Etobicoke, Ont., Nov. 28-30. After that, they are scheduled to hold
a post-Christmas training camp in Waikiki, Hawaii, Dec. 26 to Jan.
8, before resuming their conference schedule with the third Quebec
Cup competition, at Trois-Rivières, Jan. 10.
