Bielby and Muccilli named McGill athletes of the week

MONTREAL -- Steven Bielby of Pte. Claire, Que., and Victoria Muccilli of Mississauga, Ont., are the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ athletes of the week, sponsored by Ye Olde Orchard Pub, for the period ending Oct. 23, 2011.

Bielby, a sprinter and middle-distance specialist with the McGill swim team, led the Redmen to a first-place finish at the second Coupe de Quebec competition of the season, held at Memorial Pool on the McGill campus last Saturday.

The 22-year-old electrical engineering senior who measures 5-foot-8 and 150-pounds, captured four gold medals and was named male swimmer of the meet, accumulating 644.5 points on the FINA scoring system. He qualified for the CIS championships while winning the 200m butterfly (2:03.51) and the 200 individual medley (2:05.20). A product of John Abbott College, Bielby also anchored the winning 4x50 freestyle relay (1:34.17) and the 4x200 freestyle relay (7:43.94).

Muccilli, an 18-year-old goalkeeper with the women's soccer team, stopped all six shots faced while earning back-to-back shutouts as McGill defeated Laval and UQTR by identical 1-0 scores on Friday and Sunday, respectively. The 5-foot-9 history sophomore has now earned three shutout in six starts, while improving her record to 6-0 on the season. She has only been beaten once on 16 shots faced thus far. Muccilli enrolled at McGill in 2010 after graduating from Holy Name of Mary Collegiate Secondary in Mississauga.
