Bettez talks turkey as Martlets carve Concordia

Bettez notches seven, Martlets carve up Concordia
================================
MONTREAL – Sophomore Ann-Sophie Bettez scored a team record seven
points and freshman Marie-Andrée Leclerc-Auger netted another
school mark with five goals as No. 1-ranked McGill crushed
Concordia 16-1 in women’s university hockey at McConnell Arena,
Saturday.
It equaled the fourth highest single-game total for most goals
scored by a CIS team in a regular season game and matched McGill’s
previous high, accomplished in a 16-1 exhibition win over Bishop’s
on Nov. 11, 2001.
The CIS single-game record is held by St.FX, which registered a
21-0 win over UPEI, Oct. 23, 2005.
The victory also extended McGill’s win streak to 29 games over
Canadian university opponents and marked their 23rd straight
victory over Concordia, dating back to a 2-1 road loss on Feb. 5,
2006.
Bettez, a speedy forward from Sept-Iles, Que., tallied two markers
and set up five others, to establish another school record for most
assists in a game. The management sophomore who was voted CIS
rookie of the year last season, now leads the nation in scoring
with 22 points, including eight goals, in just six games.
Leclerc-Auger, a 20-year-old freshman from Sherbrooke, had five
goals and one assist. She topped the previous McGill single-game
mark of four goals held by a number of players. Leclerc-Auger, who
now has eight markers and 16 points in six contests, is the
top-scoring rookie in the CIS, is tied for third in the nation in
goals and fifth in points.
McGill, which outshot the Stingers by a resounding 52-21 margin in
shots on goal, led 2-0 after the opening period, then exploded for
seven goals in each of the final two stanzas. They tallied a team
record nine consecutive goals before the shell-shocked Stingers
could respond. Kelly Feehan scored the lone marker for Concordia,
which was the first goal allowed by netminder Charline Labonté
(3-0) this season. It also snapped her personal shutout streak at
five straight league and post-season games, totalling 347 minutes
and 57 seconds since she was last beaten, dating back to the third
period of the Quebec conference final against Carleton, Feb. 28,
2008.
The aforementioned scoring exploits overshadowed a five-point game
by captain Vanessa Davidson of Kirkland, Que., who had one goal and
four helpers.
Eleven different players registered goals or the Martlets,
including four of the six rearguards who dressed -- Cathy Chartrand
(power play) of Lac Nominingue, Catherine Ward (shorthanded) from
Town of Mt. Royal, Que., and Jasmine Sheehan, a junior from
Mississauga, had four points apiece, plus freshman defender Stacie
Tardif, who notched her first career CIS marker after missing four
league games with a concussion.
A dozen members of the Martlets earned assists and only four of 18
skaters in the lineup were kept off the scoresheet.
Rounding out the onslaught for the Martlets were forwards Caroline
Hill, Alessandra Lind-Kenny, Julie Casavecchia and Jordanna
Peroff.Â
Beleaguered Stingers starter Stephanie Peck, a sophomore from
Kirkland, took the loss in goal. She was beaten nine times and
registered 35 saves before being replaced at the 15:54 mark of the
middle stanza by Audrey Doyon-Lessard of Charny, Que.
McGill, which improved to 6-0 on the season, will now prepare for a
three-game homestand featuring non-conference games against
Atlantic-based teams Saint Mary’s, No.6-ranked St. Francis Xavier
and Dalhousie, Nov. 20-22, respectfully. The last-place Stingers
fell to 1-7 and will host the same three AUS-based squads,
beginning Nov. 21.
MARTLET MURMURS: Previous Martlets to score four goals in a game
were: Veronique Lapierre (twice: N-4-01 & F-15-02), Paula
Mailloux (N-10-01), Sarah Lomas (J-4-03) and Vanessa Davidson
(N-20-05).
