Bettez pots penalty-shot as Martlets clip Ravens, stretch streak to 66
Ìý
OTTAWA - A first-period penalty-shot goal by junior Ann-Sophie Bettez of Sept-Iles, Que., held up as the game-winner the No.1-ranked McGill Martlets tripled Carleton 3-1 in women's hockey at the CU Ice House in the nation's capital, Saturday.
Ìý
The result extended McGill's win streak to 66 consecutive games against Canadian university opponents, one short of the CIS record. It was also the Martlets' 35th straight conquest over the Ravens and improved their lifetime record to 47-0-1 against Carleton.
Ìý
Bettez, a former CIS rookie of the year who captured the league scoring crown as a sophomore, now has three game-winning markers on the season. She leads the Quebec conference in goals (10) and is ranked second in points with 15 in 10 games
Ìý
Defenceman Cathy Chartrand netted her fifth of the campaign with a wrist-shot from the right faceoff circle just 94 seconds into the game. Bettez was awarded the penalty-shot 14:09 when Ravens defender Melanie McKnight threw her stick along the ice in an attempt to disrupt Bettez who had sprung free on a breakaway. The ploy worked temporarily as Bettez lost control of the puck but failed miserably when the Martlets sniper deked and beat Carleton goalie Valerie Charbonneau of Sudbury, Ont., to put McGill ahead 2-0.
Ìý
The score stayed that way until mid-way through the final frame, when German import Sara Seiler beat freshman goalie Andrea Weckman on the power play. It was the only goal that Weckman allowed of the 16 shots faced in her first regular season start. The 19-year-old from Kitchener, Ont., then was credited with an assist on the game's final goal, a power-play marker on a 3-on-1 break, by team captain Vanessa Davidson of Kirkland, Que., with just nine seconds remaining.
Ìý
The Martlets, who outshot Carleton 29-16, improved their first-place record to 9-0 in the QSSF and have outscored opponents 40-9. McGill can tie the CIS record win streak held by Alberta when they close out the first semester at Concordia on Dec. 5.
Ìý
The mark, which has stood since 2005, could fall on Dec. 28 against the Toronto Varsity Blues at Concordia's Theresa Humes tourney. The Martlets are also scheduled to play Guelph on Dec. 29 and Manitoba on Dec. 30.
Ìý
MARTLET MURMURS: Chartrand, who had two points in the contest, has a 5-7-12 record in only nine games and is one point shy of leading all CIS bluelines... Alberta's Stephanie Ramsay has 5-8-13 in 13 contests...Ìý Bettez became the second McGill marksman to score on a penalty-shot this season... Rookie Kim Ton-That connected on one in their season-opener at McConnell Arena against Concordia, Oct. 9...
