Besse bags hat as Redmen tame NCAA's Cardinals
Ìý
PLATTSBURGH, NY -- Freshman Ryan Besse of Aurora, Ont., bagged three goals and set up another as McGill defeated the Plattsburgh State Cardinals 14-9 in a non-conference men's lacrosse game, Thursday.
Ìý
It marked the team's inaugural venture across the U.S. border and the Redmen, had to make do with Alex Kruse, their top sniper, who forgot to renew his passport.
Ìý
"Thankfully, we have so much depth on offence that we played the
fourth attackman," said head coach Tim Murdoch.
"We ended up with eight different players who scored, which is a
key element for us since our opponents have a difficult time trying
to isolate our top dogs."
Ìý
The game was knotted 2-2 afterÌýthe first quarter and McGillÌýheld a slimÌý5-4 lead at halftime.ÌýA potent Redmen offence exploded for six goals in the third quarter to surge ahead 11-6.
Ìý
Scoring two goals apiece for the Redmen was Scott Bailey of Calgary, Mike Ting of Boston, Jake Safarik of Vancouver, B.C., and Greg Henry of Halton Hills, Ont.
Ìý
The Redmen defence neutralizing the Cardinals scoring chancers for much of the contest and sophomore goalie Simon Hudson, a native of Seattle, Wash., registered the victory.
Ìý
McGill had a strong performance on face-offs, led by Jake Winn of Falmouth, Maine and Jishan Sharples of Vancouver.
Ìý
The Redmen, who improved to 8-2 overall, including a 6-2 regular season record, will travel to Worcester, Mass., on October 17 to face a stiffer challenge against Holy Cross, an NCAA Division-I team that competes in the Patriot League. The game is set for 3 p.m.
Ìý
"I have a feeling that Holy Cross wil be a much differenet game," said Murdoch. "But if play as well as we did tonight and Holy Cross is not on top of their game, we may surprise 'em."
